Community Walks

Each summer Price has an activity called the Community Walks program. You sign up for it and receive maps for 9 different walks of various distances (from about 2-6 miles each) When you complete them all you get a prize. At least, I think we get a prize?  We'd better be getting a prize, someone please reassure me that we will, indeed, be rewarded for this?!

We signed up for the first time this year. The first walk we did was in the Price City Cemetery. We had to follow a map to find certain headstones for people who had been prominent community members.  It was basically a treasure hunt to find dead people. I tried not to find that to be too morbid!

One of the headstones we went to was of Robert Marshall, a black man who had been lynched in 1925 because he was accused of murdering another man.  He was originally buried in an unmarked grave but in 1998 was given a proper headstone (and a much belated apology.)

Tyson spent some time showing the kids how to read a map.  Good thing he was there with us or it would have taken much longer to find our way around!  It also doesn't hurt to have a handsome man hanging out with you in the cemetery....just in case there are any "ghosties" hangin' about!

The walk led us to the "outlaws" section of the cemetery.  This is where 4 outlaws were buried.  One of which was thought to be Butch Cassidy but turned out to be someone else.

Yeppers, my 9 year old IS almost as tall as me....and no I've NEVER heard that one before!

We are looking forward to doing more walks to help us learn about our town!  Also, positive side effect of this post.....I finally learned the correct way to spell cemetery.  All these years I've though it was an cemetary. Turns out you really can learn something new everyday....unless of course you're already residing at the cemetery.  Sorry, probably not appropriate.
