Pinewood Derby

About a week ago we were able to go to Zac's very first pinewood derby.  He had a great time planning and building his Derby car.  It was wonderful bonding time for Zac, Tyson and Grandpa Bill.  We went to Grandpa Bill's house a few weekends ago so we could borrow his tools and his expertise.

Zac was pretty excited that we could finally get started.  He'd had his car kit for about a month and we had to postpone making it a week longer than we meant to, so he was raring to go!

Tyson decided to keep a close eye on Zac while he used grandpa's big belt sander.  Apparently making a Pinewood Derby car is not a worthy enough cause to lose a finger for!

Zac has always loved to work with grandpa in his garage and they've made lots of fun projects together, including airplanes, bookshelves, and wooden guns.  They had a lot of fun working on this project and planning how to make the fastest car around! They wanted it to be very precise.  The car has to weigh less than 5 ounces.  They got it to 4.991 and decided that would have to be close enough! When it was all done, Grandpa actually packaged it in styrofoam so it couldn't get damaged before the big day.

Zac decided to make his car red with gold lightning bolts on it.  Poor kid was also suffering from severe allergies!

His car turned out to be pretty darn fast.  He took 4th place overall.  He was very happy with that but is already planning what he can do for next year so he can win 1st place!

Grandpa wasn't planning on coming up for the derby but in the end he had to come and see how fast the car turned out to be.  Grandma Susan also came too.  All the family really enjoyed going to the derby!  We can't wait until all three boys are in cub scouts together and we get to make 3 cars....oh,  goodness, THREE CARS! Yikes!
