Family History Field Trip

For Spring Break I took the kids on a trip to southern Utah to visit my parents. Tyson had to stay home again...darn work! On the first day we got there we went with Grandma and Grandpa to the Family History Center in Kanab where they spend 3 hours each Thursday helping others to do research. It was really fun to see my parents, especially my dad, working on the computer. My dad has always been a little leery of computers and this has been very good for him in getting him to learn how to use them and feel comfortable. We spent over 2 hours there and the kids seemed to really enjoy it. They all kind of started doing different things. Lexi wanted to look up how closely we were related to famous people. Zac started filling in my chart with the help of Grandma, and Drake and Garrett each wrote a short little life story about themselves on their own pages. We found out we are related to a lot of famous people and have royalty on both sides of the family. The Chappell family line goes clear back to about 1012 b.c. and has A LOT of royalty, even Kings and Queens. We found out we are related to almost all the Outlaws of the Old West (Butch Cassidy, Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Clyde - of Bonnie and Clyde fame, and Doc Holiday.) We're also 10th cousins with Johnny Depp and 6th cousins with Johnny Cash. And Amelia Earheart was our 12th cousin. We also discovered, from the pictures on the wall, that Kanab was the first city in the nation to ever have an all female city council clear back in 1912 (you can see the picture of them in the last picture on this page.) That was very progressive of them! It was fun to try something new and the kids got into it so much more than I thought they would.

When we were done with our Family History experience the kids begged me to take them to Arizona. I had told them we were only 10 miles from the border and they said they'd never been there (though they have and just don't remember!) and they made me drive them there so they could say they went to Arizona for Spring Break. And even though I had already driven 5 hours that day I made a special effort to be an awesome mom and I drove them to Arizona! We took a picture and turned around and went back to Utah. Silly Kids!
