The day before Tyson's birthday we had his family over for the day. Susan had just celebrated a birthday and Shay's is in a few days, so we celebrated all three birthdays together. We went to Dos Los Amigos for lunch and then had red velvet cake and ice cream at our house for dessert. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon just chatting.

Birthday Boy!
Yesterday Tyson had his...ahem...41st...cough, cough...birthday! This year I actually made more of an effort to buy him something (that he didn't already know about!) and I even wrapped it too! Usually we fall in to the habit of just "oh, you want a surround sound system in June? Well, Happy Early Birthday!" I knew he had been asking for a new racquetball racket and balls. So I picked some up for him. I knew he would like it because it said Chaos on it. It's the little things really! He also got new wool fingerless gloves for those cold photography nights he likes to do. He's had his old ones for about 15 years and well, he was probably due for some new ones! The last present was a handmade gift. I've been getting in to a hobby called Book Art where you take old hardcover books and measure, cut and fold them to show a pattern in the pages. It's pretty meticulous and time consuming but oddly satisfying to watch the picture show up out of seemingly meaningless markings. Some of the tabs are only a 10th of a centimeter wide! This particular project was a decorative candy skull done in a Stephen King book called Bag of Bones. Fairly symbolic for a Stephen King reading anatomy professor who collects skulls, I thought! Oh, and he is also going to a Tool concert with some of his buddies tonight as part of his birthday celebrations. We didn't do a whole lot on his birthday although I did make biscuits and gravy for breakfast and a big ham dinner. Apparently we're all about the food around here! We did take a Sunday drive out to East Carbon looking for wildlife for Tyson to try shooting with his fancy new lens, but we weren't very successful...just a few antelope that were REALLY far away and a horse that wouldn't lift it's head up for it's photo op. We also let the kids play at the park in East Carbon for a bit. It has a fun little zip line and a ninja game that they like.
