Tonight we had our Family Book Club for the book Savvy by Ingrid Law. It is about a family in which each member receives their "savvy" on their thirteenth birthday. A savvy is basically just any kind of super power. They don't know what their savvy will be until it happens. The main character, Mibs, is hoping for a savvy that will help her heal her father who has been in a bad car accident. It turns out that her savvy is being able to read the minds of anyone who has a tattoo (stick with me here...I know it's kinda weird!) Mibs, two of her siblings, and the preacher's kids all end up going on a quest on the pink bus of a Bible salesman to get to her father in the hospital and try to help him recover. They have many adventures along the way, become good friends, and do a lot of growing up. Ultimately, the tattoo mind reading savvy does actually come in handy in helping her dad. The book is mainly about being yourself and having confidence.
For our book club night we learned some things about the author, we asked questions about the book, and decided what we wanted our savvies to be. Lexi wants to be able to change into any animal, Zac upped the ante by saying he wanted to be able to turn into any creature, Garrett wanted to be able to catch sound waves, Drake wanted to be able to make good food, and I wanted the ability to be in two places at once (doesn't every mom need that super power?!) We asked Tyson what he wanted his savvy to be but he never came up with one....so I'll give him one....to be able to pass every level of Candy Crush before he gets too frustrated!
In the book, Lill, a woman they pick up on the side of the road because her car is broken down, goes to the Mega Mega Mart and buys a whole bunch of supplies. So using the list of items that she bought I put together the game where you uncover a bunch of items and they get to look for 30 seconds, then have to try and remember everything they saw. Lexi scored the highest with 11 out of 16.
Their favorite part was probably putting on fake tattoos.Unfortunately, none of us have Mibs savvy so there was no mind reading tonight!
Last of all we had to have treats! In the book there is a banana cream pie throwing episode, followed by a banana cream pie being stolen from the diner, so of course we had to have some pie! They also each got a roll of Bubble Gum Tape because one of the characters in the books has endless supplies of it. The kids were very excited about this because I have never bought them Bubble Tape before.
Savvy was a cute book and the kids enjoyed it very much. Now we are going to be reading The Hero's Guide to Storming the Castle. It is the sequel to The Hero's Guide to Saving your Kingdom which was one of the best books we have read so far. We are looking forward to it!
