This past Sunday we went to my friend Sally Sanchez's house and had a joint book club with her family. Awhile back we realized we were both reading the book The Hobbit to our kids so we had gotten together to discuss it. We liked the joint book club idea so much we decided to do it again. This time we both read the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen to our kids. It's a story about a 13 year old boy, Brian, who gets stranded in the Canadian wilderness and has to survive until he is rescued. Both families really enjoyed the book (so much so that both of us are now reading the sequel Brian's Winter.) My kids were constantly interrupting me during our reading to tell me something else that Brian could do that would help him survive. It really got them thinking!
For our book club we asked questions about the book and if you got the answer right you got a Swedish Fish (Brian survives, in part, because he learns how to spear fish.) Then Lexi gave us some survival tips she had found on the internet and Lily shared some information about the author.
Sally's husband, Grant, is an archeologist so he shared some really
interesting information about arrow heads and how they are made.
Then Sally cooked up some rabbit meat (they raise their own rabbits) and
we all tried rabbit. In the book Brian also makes his own bow and
shoots rabbits to survive.
We really enjoyed our book club activity and I'm sure will do it again soon!

Sounds fun! How was the rabbit? Sam really wants to shoot one and Dustin is always wanting to make haffenpheffer (sp?). But I've never tasted it and want to know whether I should encourage it or not?! We really need to get back into doing our family book club, I've missed doing that with my kids!
Rabbit is actually not too bad. it really tastes similar to chicken except it's chewier.
