Best of Show!

Last week Drake and Garrett had their first shot at Science Fair. They did really amazing! Drake got first place in his category (Astronomy) and Best in Show, which means he got 1st out of everyone who competed, and there were a lot of projects! He won $65 which was pretty exciting for him. Garrett got 2nd place in his category (Biology) and won a Wave Pool pass and a Movie ticket. I thought their projects were pretty cool. Drake was studying whether you could tell the size and weight of a meteorite based on the crater it left behind. He used three balls that were the same diameter but different weights and three balls that were different diameters but the same weight. He dropped each ball into a box of flour 3 times and then measured the depth and width of the "craters." His conclusion was that the bigger the diameter and the heavier the weight, the bigger the crater would be. However, a small, heavy ball like a golf ball can also create a deep crater.

Garrett's project was about mummification. He mummified a hot dog using baking soda as his "dessicant." In real mummies they used a product called Natron rather than baking soda. Garrett had to start his project a month in advance so he'd have enough time to really mummify the hot dog. Each week he weighed and measured the hot dog and then packed it in to fresh baking soda. By the end he had a very brown, rubbery, stinky mummified hot dog!

Memorable Moment: On Friday the kids were out of school so we went to the bank and set up bank accounts for each of them since both Zac and Drake had won money at Science Fair and we decided mom's desk drawer wasn't the safest place for all that moolah! They were all so excited about it!
