Last weekend was Fall Break for the kids so we went up to Salt Lake for a mini vacation. We spent the first day at the Natural History Museum at the University of Utah. There was so much to see! There are 5 stories of exhibits with everything from dinosaurs, Native American artifacts, natural disasters, life (DNA, cells. first people, etc), and sky and weather. We were also able to see and learn about 3 different animals. They showed us a tiger salamander, a huge American bullfrog, and two gofer snakes.
They had the fossil lab open for visitors so we got to see them actually chipping real dinosaur bones out of their surrounding layers of rock. This woman was telling us about the discovery of a new dinosaur that is a type of tyrannosaur that is 40 million years older than Tyrannasaurus Rex. They will be doing a press release next month to tell people about it and to share it's name.
Tyson liked the exhibit showing the different skull types of our ancestral tree.
About half way through our visit we decided to stop by the museum cafe for a little boost of sugar. Sweet rolls for everyone!
This exhibit was about the effects of water erosion. They enjoyed playing in the sand and directing the water through it.
Lexi's face says it all! The guy was just telling them that salamanders (all amphibians really) are covered in mucus so their skin doesn't dry out. When he got the bullfrog out of it's cooler it almost jumped right out of his hands into Drake's face. It was a close call!

Our kids are sure troopers. We ended up spending 4 HOURS at the museum and no one even complained! It was a great day and very educational. That night we went to dinner with uncle Shay to Chuckarama. We had gotten free kids meals coupons for completing the Governor's Summer Reading Program. We also had coupons for meals at Applebee's (which we used the next day) and to McDonald's. We stayed the night at Shay's house. The kids fell asleep almost immediately. I guess we wore them out!
