Pinewood Derby

A few weeks ago Zac participated in his second Pinewood Derby for cub scouts. Last year he was so meticulous with the design for his car and this year he just wanted to keep it really simple and try to make the fastest car possible. He had a good time working with his dad and Grandpa on this project. We went to Loa for the weekend so we could work on the car (we thought he would need to use some of Grandpa's special tools) and in the end he only used a sander and a drill, which happen to be the only power tools we actually own at home! His car was a just a wedge with the weights on the top like an engine and spray painted silver. He named it the Silver Wedgie! And it turned out to be very, very fast! He took 3rd place overall but I think he would have done even better than that except in one of the heats his car jumped the track and they decided not to re-run the heat. I think it also would have been better to have a championship round at the end and let the top 4 cars race each other on each of the four tracks before declaring a winner. After the derby was over the top three did have a race against each other and Zac's car won. Oh well. Maybe next year!
