If You're Reading This, It's Too Late!

NO, NO, Don't Worry! It's not really too late for anything, that's the title of the book we just finished reading for Family Book Club. It's a sequel to The Name of This Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch. We read the first book awhile back and the kids liked it so much we decided to read the second book in the series. To me, the books seemed to be very similar which made it more difficult to get through this one. But the kids loved it and that's what matters anyway. Plus, the book provided me with some awesome inspiration for a book club activity night. In the book, Cass, the main character, has a sock monster that keeps getting mentioned throughout the book. So we decided to make sock monsters of our own. Thank you Pinterest for providing ideas for cute sock puppets rather than letting me think that you just sew buttons and yarn onto old mismatched socks. Pinterest saves the day!

The kids were very excited when I told them what we were doing.  It took mere seconds before there were pom poms, sequins and felt scraps strewn about the kitchen!

I got to be the wielder or the hot glue gun and I've got the blister on my finger to prove it!  Lexi did glue most of hers but I helped the boys with theirs.

Drake really got into this project!  His ended up with a goatee, horns, a curly red tail and pom poms and sequins all over it.  Both Drake and Garrett took their finished project for show and tell today.

Zac put a shirt on his monster because he tried to draw on it with a Sharpie and it didn't work so well.  He named his Jo Jo and put a letter J on his shirt like he's a super hero or something.  When I got up this morning to get the kids up for school Zac was already awake and playing with his sock monster.

It is a little harder to see the decorations on the black sock puppets but they turned out really cute too.  If you look closely you'll see Lexi's has earrings.  "Ooooooh, you're a girl monster......well of course you're a girl monster!"

Garrett was probably the most independent one on this project.  He didn't want me to help him with hardly anything.  I did insist on running the glue gun though.  Those orange pipe cleaners on the side are arms.

After we finished our craft we had a treasure hunt.  Tyson thinks we do far too many treasure hunts around here but the kids think they are fun.  This one was a little different because the clues were written in musical notes.  In the book the characters have to figure out what a series of notes spells so they can unravel part of the mystery.  So our codes were things like cab (the van), face (where dad washes his face) , feed (the dog food container), gab (the phone) etc. Turns out there's not a lot of things you can spell with only the letters A thru G!  In the end they found little presents in Zac's bed.  They were little magic sets from the Dollar Store because the book is also about magicians.  Then we were supposed to have a treat, but I completely forgot because the other activities had taken so long and it was time for bed.  So we are having our treats today.  Nothing like dragging a book club activity into the next day! 

Our next book is going to be The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg.  It's the 2010 Newberry Honor book. It's supposed to be a humorous story that takes place during the Civil War.  We've been reading a lot of books about magic lately so it will be great to have a different setting.
