This week we went to Moab, UT with my mom and dad and my niece, Millie, for three days. Normally Moab is really, really hot this time of year but it turned out to be an unseasonably cool week. In fact, I was regretting that I forgot to take a jacket! The first evening we were there we went in to Arches National Park and just did a few of the really short hikes to the North and South Windows, The Turrett Arch, and Double Arch. It was only about 80 degrees and a little gusty but it was really nice.
On Thursday, our second day, we got up early and hiked to Delicate Arch. This is probably the steepest hike but also the most famous one. It is 3 miles round trip but the kids all handled it just fine. It was a little warmer that day but nothing like it could have been. I'm glad the kids were old enough to be careful up on top because there are some pretty incredible drop offs. Garrett took the picture of the Arch here. He and Drake are both becoming pretty interested in photography and they take some great pictures!
After our hike we went to the yummy Mexican restaurant in town and got stuffed on deluxe nachos and super burritos. Then we went back to the condo to watch the Euro 16 Quarter Finals (Portugal v. Poland.) We were staying at a really nice condo owned by my cousin Brooke. She uses it for a rental property and it was very nice and comfortable. In fact, I got a little sleepy during the soccer game and ended up taking a two hour nap instead! Later that afternoon we went to Deadhorse Point, which is out by Canyonlands National Park. By the time we got out there a huge thunderstorm had rolled in. We went out to look over the edge (it's a HUGE drop off with a view of the Colorado River) and lightning was striking so close to us that we felt the hair on the top of our heads stand up (even Grandpa!) so we decided to head back to the car! Tyson was still out there taking pictures when the storm hit, and hit HARD! He had to stand under the pavilion, out of the rain, for at least 45 minutes while we waited in the car.
Our last day there we got up early again and went back to Arches. We took Grandpa Gerry to the viewpoint where you can see Delicate Arch without hiking the three miles. It started raining on us there so we were glad everyone had jackets and that I could borrow Grandpa's! After looking at the viewpoint we went to Devil's Garden to see some of the Arches there: Tunnel Arch, Pine Tree Arch, and Landscape Arch with Double O Arch up in the distance, but we didn't want to climb the steep mountain to see it! It rained on us during most of this 2+ mile hike, but it felt nice. Much better than the last time Tyson and I hiked it and it was so hot that we both got more dehydrated than was healthy! Tyson was leading the way and managed to get a nice little scare from a rather good sized snake!
After our morning hikes we went back to the condo for another Euro 16 game (Wales vs. Belgium) I think the soccer games may have been the most important part of the trip for Zac. We don't have cable so any chance he gets to watch soccer makes it a vacation! It started raining really hard and the streets around the condo were flooding. I haven't seen that much rain since Memphis probably! After we left the condo we stopped in Green River to eat at Ray's Tavern. I have heard from several people that it is the place to go to eat. Hmmm....it was fine to try it, but I'm not sure what all the hype is about. Next time we'll probably go somewhere where the bathroom doors at least shut!
We had a great trip and really enjoyed being with my parents and getting to know Millie better. Lexi wasn't with us though because she was at a 4 day long volleyball camp, so that was strange. We've never gone anywhere like this without her. We missed our little girl!
